Somerset Beach Campground and Retreat Center
Somerset Center, Michigan
147 RV Sites, 4 Cabins
On 226 acres of scenic woodland in southern Michigan's Hillsdale County, Somerset Beach Campground and Retreat Center has been delivering diverse outdoor recreation and family camping since 1982 on a property that combines a private lake, miles of hiking trails, and an indoor climbing wall with the full range of outdoor programming that makes it genuinely unusual among Michigan campgrounds. Located at 9822 Brooklawn Court in Somerset Center—a rural community in the rolling farm and forest landscape south of Jackson—the campground serves families, church groups, youth organizations, and individual campers who want more from a campground than hookups and a fire ring.
More than 150 electric sites serve RV and tent campers alongside rustic cabins that provide a cozy retreat for those who prefer a roof. A fill and dump station handles RV logistics, and WiFi reaches throughout the grounds. The private lake provides swimming from a sandy beach, fishing, kayak launching, and boat rentals for those who want to explore its quiet coves. A zip line, small archery range, large playground, indoor gym, and indoor climbing wall extend the recreational options well beyond what the typical Michigan campground provides, and organized weekend activities for families and youth groups create a programmed environment ideal for group retreats and family reunions.
Somerset Center sits in the Hillsdale County countryside where southern Michigan's agricultural landscape of corn and soybean fields gives way to patches of second-growth forest, wetland, and the morainic hills left by the last glaciation. The private lake at Somerset Beach occupies a kettle depression—a characteristic glacial feature formed when buried ice blocks melted after the glacier retreated—creating the clear, relatively deep water that characterizes many of Michigan's finest inland lakes. Sandhill cranes walk the surrounding meadows, white-tailed deer browse the forest edges, and the woodland birding throughout the property is consistently rewarding.
The campground's location in southern Michigan places it within comfortable range of several notable destinations. Hillsdale College, in Hillsdale 20 miles east, is a nationally recognized liberal arts institution with a handsome Victorian-era campus and public programming. The Irish Hills lake district to the north, centered on Wamplers and Round Lakes, provides additional water recreation in a landscape of summer cottages and wooded shorelines that has been a Michigan vacation destination for generations. Ann Arbor and Lansing are within 45 minutes for urban day trips that extend the camping experience into the broader regional itinerary.
Somerset Beach operates May through October, with summer season at its most active from Memorial Day through Labor Day when families fill the sites and youth groups run their retreat programming. The property's diverse programming infrastructure makes it genuinely functional as a group facility outside the peak camping season for organized retreats. Individual campers who appreciate the extra programming options—the lake, the trails, the climbing wall—will find the combination unusual and rewarding. Reserve your electric site or rustic cabin at Somerset Beach Campground and discover a southern Michigan outdoor experience that goes well beyond the typical family camping formula.
